BassWest Magazine Features MADnificent & The Professional

    Posted on by Havoc

Congratulations to MADnificent and The Professional for making it B.I.G. ! They were featured in a five page spread in the January-February 2011 issue of Bass West USA magazine.  These guys have worked very hard to make it this far doing a lot of damage to their competition on the California Delta along the way.  Their 2010 season was phenomenal wrapping up 4 Angler’s of the Year titles (yes I said 4 )  with seven first places and multiple top 5 finishes.  They have already got off to another good start for the 2011 season.  Inflicting damage like that on the California Delta which is arguably one of the nations most competitive fishing arenas is sure to attract someones attention.

Not even the sky is the limit for this dynamic duo.  I’m sure there are a lot of teams on the Delta that wish these guys would just disappear.  I am certain they will get their wish one day in the coming years as I expect to be watching both these guys on Saturday morning fishing the Forest Wood Cup or Bassmasters Classic.  But for now if you are fishing a team tournament on the Delta you will most certainly have to see these guys at the podium so bring your A game.  These guys are simply a terror on the water…the stuff nightmares are made of!

Once again congrats fellas. We are proud of you both and all your success.  We wish you guys nothing but more success in the future.  May your lines stay tight and your live wells stay full! Yeetadeee

    Shenanigans Part 1

    Posted on by Havoc

So I’m sure you all are aware of fishing stories and tall tales but I’m here to talk about the stories that many fishermen don’t like to tell.  I’m talking about stories of things going wrong all be it by some silly thoughtless mistake made by you or some act of nature that you had not control over.  We like to call those mishaps “shenanigans!”  If you are a true fisherman you have certainly had your share of them.  No one knows more about fishing shenanigans then myself and Mr. Rippn Lipps.  Although we have not been fishing together very long we have been the unsuspecting victims of more shenanigans than I would like to admit. I would just like to share with you guys one such experience so you can see how “we roll.”

It was my birthday weekend January 2010.  Being the fisherman that I am I said screw a birthday party lets go fishing at Clear Lake CA  for a few days since I had never been to this famous lake .  My old lady being as nice as she is paid for us a nice room on the water. All we had to do was show up and fish!

Well I take off of work that Friday so me and Mr. Rippn Lipps can get an early start on the weekend.  By this point I’m well aware of all the things that could go wrong with a 3hr boat tow to our destination. So I go threw inspection of the boat and trailer. Low and be hold I find that the bow strap is dry rotted and about to snap! I correct that and proceed to check the lugs on the trailer, tire pressure, etc. After my thorough inspection we set off. I’m feeling pretty good because I did catch one potentially disastrous problem with the bow strap.  Then Mr. Rippn Lipps says “hey you want to fish Camanche Lake? Its on the way to Clear Lake plus it would be cool to fish two lakes instead of one!”  I’m like “sure…why not?” So we make it to Camanche a beautiful lake by the way but we don’t get a single bite all day.  We said screw Camanche lets pack it up and head to our main location.

Without incident we load the boat onto the trailer again. I do my “inspection” and we are off to Clear Lake. We get about 2 miles from the Camanche reservoir traveling down this steep, narrow, winding two line road (common road for many reservoir lakes in California).   Suddenly we hear a loud crash…but we still riding fairly smooth. I’m in the passenger seat and look to the right and I see a wheel rolling along side of the truck bouncing and jumping hills on the side of the road. I’m like “that wheel looks familiar…isn’t that the wheel from our boat trailer? ” Mr. Rippn Lipps looks at me we look back at the boat and the right side of the trailer is light up like the fourth of July I mean sparks flying everywhere!

So we bring the truck to a grinding halt.  We get out to find that all five studs in the axle are broken off clean and our tire is nowhere to be found.  We decided to move our vehicle and boat out of the middle of this dangerous two lane road since it was so dark. Mr. Rippn Lipps drags (and I mean drags) the boat and trailer about 50yds into a small driveway so we can do more thorough assessment safely.  I find the rogue wheel laying in the bushes just short of flying off a cleft.  The wheel is ruined but we have a spare so I’m hopeful…at least for a split second until I realize that there are no studs on the axle to put a spare tire on! We were so screwed!

After about an hour we can’t find any towing companies in the area that could handle a boat and broken trailer.  We realize we have to try to repair the axle ourselves if we want to salvage our trip but we don’t have the tools necessary to do it.  Being the resourceful person that I am I whip out my iPhone and locate a Wal-Mart not to far away.  We unhook the trailer and head to the store. We just made it in before they closed. I buy some tools and we head back to the boat. Then on the way back out of no where a thunderstorm shows up dumping rain and lighting everywhere.  We make it back to the boat despite the monsoon.  I commence to disassemble the axle in the mud, rain and lighting while Mr. Rippn Lipps holds the umbrella and offers moral support (neither of which he did very well LOL).  I finally get the axle off but its to late to get it repaired so we decide to leave the boat and trailer on the side of the road and hope to repair the axle first thing in the morning.  But we can’t leave that nice troll motor or anything else of value on the boat overnight on this dark country road so we strip the boat of everything except the outboard motor.  Exhausted, dusted and disgusted we head home.

First, thing in the morning we attempt to get the axle repaired by several mechanics. They all refuse to fix it because the axle was in to bad of shape.  Still thinking about making my fishing trip and salvaging my birthday we decide to fix it our selves.  So with a few “how to”tips from the NAPA guy we began banging out the old broken axle studs and replacing them one by one.  We get her done and head back to the boat… hoping and praying nobody stole it over night.  Thankfully she was still there so we greased the axle and put it back on. Placed the spare on and we were back in business.  Well almost we had to remount the troll motor and replace all the things we stripped…and then we were back in business.

By this time it was late in the day about 4pm on Saturday so we opted to try fishing Camanche again since we were just a mile away instead of pushing it to Clear Lake.   We fished our hearts out but Camanche showed us no love once again. With no fish, bruised knuckles, bruised spirits, buised egos and a beat up boat trailer so we decided to cancel the trip to Clear Lake just to try to make it home safely! The Shenanigans had gotten the best of us! We made it home boat in tow thanks to God. Happy Birthday to Me!

    Delta Fishing Report

    Posted on by Havoc

Bass-Well with temperatures in the 30′s at night and up to mid 50′s during the day the bite has been a little slow for bass fishing in the Delta.  However, a few people are always able to find them (i.e. MADnificent and The Professional with 2nd place in Angler’s Choice this past week end- Congrats boys).  Advice whatever you are doing (crankbait, jerkbaits, flippin, soft plastics, etc) you have to slow it down and fish super slow….

Striped bass- the striper fishing has picked up with these temperatures especially in the upper stream of the Mokelumne rivers from Wimpy’s down to Snodgrass Slough.  Live bait of many different types have been catching nice stripers. There have been some nice boils spotted in Discovery Bay with nice sized schools of stripers.

Crappie- Biting great on live minnows and mini-jigs if you can find them. Many schools of nice fish have been located around docks and inside marinas. They seem to be biting best when the tides are in transition either incoming or outgoing.

Sturgeon- There were very good sturgeon reported at Sherman Island and Rio Vista Bridge last week with some good size sturgeon caught on grass shrimp or ghost shrimp bait.

If you are brave enough to face these temperatures you should be able to find a few fish so don’t let this cold weather scare ya…Be A Fisherman Not A Wisherman!! Yeetadee

    MADnificent on Lure Color Selection

    Posted on by Havoc

Lure color selection can be one of the most frustrating things to deal with when it comes to bass fishing.  Here are just a few brief tips on how I go about this challenging process.  So without being too confusing or going into a ton of detail lets just start with the basics and in time you will begin to expand on this. Usually I will use two factors when determining what color lure to pick for the day.First and foremost is water clarity. Second, is water temperature. Generally I will use natural colors(i.e. Watermelon, Green Pumpkin, and Brown/ Greens) in clear to semi-stained water and then dark or loud colors(i.e. Blck/blue, Purple, and chartreuse) in stained to muddy water. This is going to apply to your soft plastic baits. As far as hard baits are concerned its going to be a little different. First off I don’t like to fish certain reaction baits( i.e. Crankbaits and rip baits ) in stained to muddy waters because it’s usually a visual strike unless the water temps are up. Usually, I will use two pattern baits, crawfish and shad. Once again I like natural colors, so for crawfish I like black/red and brown/organge and for shad its blue/white and black/chrome.  That’s enough for now kids! Stay tuned Yeetadee!

MADnificent and The Professional Dominate the field with 5 fish for 31lbs!

    Posted on by Havoc

The two most dominate anglers in team tournaments on the California Delta Mark Daniels Jr (MADnificent) and Jamond Andrews (The Professional) continue their assault on the Delta with a scale breaking 3o.87lbs in the WON Bass final tournament taking 1st place.  These guys weighed in an 10.5pounder escorted by two 7 pounders and two nice black bass to round out their 5 fish limit. These guys have simply been on fire this year and show no signs of cooling off. Trust me this isn’t the last we have heard of these guys! Get used to it!  Great job! Yeetadee!!
